Setting up a CNAME record for each of the domain addresses or subdomains you have in a hosting account allows you to redirect it to a different domain/subdomain. The forwarded domain will lose all of its records - A, MX and so forth, and will take the records of the Internet domain it's being redirected to. In this light, you cannot set up a CNAME record to point your domain to a third-party provider and maintain a functional email service with the first provider. It's also important to note that a CNAME record is always a string of words rather than a number because it is regularly wrongly identified as the A record of the Internet domain being redirected. One of the main uses of a CNAME record is to point a domain which you own through one provider to the servers of another provider when you have set up a site with the latter. That way, the Internet site will appear under your own domain, not under some subdomain provided by the third-party provider.
